2026 Climate Outlook: A Promising Year Ahead for Indonesia

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has unveiled an encouraging climate assessment for Indonesia in 2026. Following the extreme weather conditions witnessed in 2024, the upcoming year is expected to bring about a more stable and mild climate.

A Shift Towards Stability

According to BMKG Deputy for Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, the stabilization of the climate in 2026 is primarily attributed to the conclusion of the weak La Nina phenomenon, which is set to end in the first quarter of the year. This transition is projected to usher in a neutral global climate phase that is anticipated to persist throughout the year.

Temperatures Within Normal Ranges

In a significant positive indicator for the nation, the average air temperature in 2026 is forecasted to remain between 25 to 29 degrees Celsius. This range is considered normal, and notably, it will not surpass the extreme heat records set in 2024.

Enhanced Conditions for Various Sectors

The BMKG also predicts more stable sea conditions around Indonesian waters in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Such stability is crucial as it reduces the likelihood of extreme weather anomalies, providing a favorable environment for various sectors, including agriculture and disaster management.

Utilizing Technology for Better Predictions

The outlook was made possible through advanced atmospheric and ocean physics modeling, enhanced by the integration of artificial intelligence. BMKG urges both the government and the public to leverage this valuable climate information for better planning and preparedness across multiple sectors.
