His timely intervention saved a mother and her three children from a submerged vehicle in a canal, turning a potential tragedy into a heartwarming tale of heroism.

As Curtis drove along Allapattah Road in Martin County, he glanced in his rearview mirror and saw chaos unfold. A car following closely behind him veered off the road and flipped upside down into a nearby canal. Without hesitation, Curtis pulled over, called 911, and followed the tire marks to the wreckage. There, he found a Jeep partly submerged in water, and inside were three frightened children, aged just 8, 2, and 4 months.

A Miraculous Rescue

With the children's safety as his primary concern, Curtis quickly extricated them from the car and brought them to solid ground. Yet, his bravery didn't end there—he entered the cold water to rescue their mother, Shyenique Wilkins, who was struggling for breath. “I lifted the mom’s head up out of the water, and she wasn’t breathing,” Curtis recounted. He administered life-saving breaths until she began breathing again.

Community Support and Recovery

Emergency responders soon arrived on the scene, transporting the family to the hospital. Thankfully, the three children escaped the incident unharmed, while their mother required further medical attention and remains on a ventilator. In a show of community solidarity, Wilkins’ niece initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical expenses, which has already raised over $4,100 towards their $10,000 goal.
