A stunning photograph capturing a young Iberian lynx mid-play has been awarded the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award 2026. The photograph, titled "Flying Rodent," was taken by Austrian photographer Josef Stefan during his two-week stay in Torre de Juan Abad, Ciudad Real province, Spain.

Stefan's dedication to wildlife photography is evident as he spent several days in a hide, waiting for the perfect moment. His patience paid off when the young lynx appeared, energetically engaging with its prey. For nearly 20 minutes, this magnificent creature showcased its playful nature, throwing its catch into the air and catching it again, captivating the photographer and demonstrating the joy of the wild.

The Road to Recovery for the Iberian Lynx

The Iberian lynx, a species that faced near extinction in the early 2000s with fewer than 100 individuals left, has seen a remarkable resurgence due to extensive conservation efforts. Today, the population has increased to over 2,000, reflecting the success of reintroduction initiatives and a growing awareness of biodiversity preservation. Despite these positive trends, the species still faces challenges and remains classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

A Celebration of Wildlife Photography

This award ceremony not only recognizes the best in wildlife photography but also serves as a platform to promote awareness about the importance of nature conservation. The People's Choice Award this year attracted a record-breaking 85,917 votes from nature enthusiasts around the globe for all 24 nominated images. In addition to the winning photograph, four other finalists received high commendation, exemplifying the depth and beauty of wildlife captured through the lens.
