A Celebration of Art: Artist Proof Studio Turns 35 and Inspires a New Generation

In an inspiring move to celebrate its 35th anniversary, Johannesburg's famous Artist Proof Studio (APS) is joining forces with Strauss & Co for a unique exhibition and online auction. Running until April 17, this special event not only showcases the talents of various artists but also aims to uplift emerging local talent by directing all proceeds to education programs supporting young artists.

Empowering Local Artists through Education

Artist Proof Studio has spent over three decades dedicated to making quality art education accessible to aspiring artists who might otherwise lack such opportunities. Each year, approximately 100 students participate in its educational programs, which equip them with essential printmaking techniques and professional tools necessary for a successful career in the art world.

Under the guidance of experienced printmakers and artists, including co-founder Kim Berman and notable figures like Nathi Simelane and Wilhelm van Rensburg, these emerging talents are nurtured and prepared to navigate the complexities of the art industry.

The Impact of the Exhibition and Auction

This year’s exhibition features a rich mix of artists who have emerged from the pathways created by APS, alongside fresh faces still building their artistic profiles. Each artwork sold contributes directly to student bursaries and scholarships, ensuring that studio spaces remain well-equipped and operational.

Moreover, the auction offers a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts and collectors to acquire prints at competitive prices, enabling new collectors to enter the market while supporting the local art community. Given that prints are produced in editions, artists benefit from multiple sales, promoting a sustainable income that enriches the entire creative ecosystem.

Join the Celebration

The public can view the exhibition in person at Strauss & Co in Houghton during weekdays until April 17. With the online auction available simultaneously, art lovers from anywhere can participate in this uplifting initiative. The closing week will also feature a walkabout on April 15 from 16:00 to 17:30, allowing visitors to engage with the artwork and learn firsthand from the creators and educators about the artistry and significance of their work.

This celebration not only honors APS's impactful legacy but also underscores the transformative power of art education in nurturing the next generation of South African artists.
