A Dream Becomes Reality: An 8-Year-Old's Train Design Lights Up the Tracks

A delightful story from the Netherlands showcases the extraordinary imagination of children as an 8-year-old girl's design came to life on the carriages of a special train. Phileine, a young artist from Zutphen, emerged victorious in the NS Drawing Competition hosted by the national train operator NS, which invites children from across the country to submit their creative drawings for train designs.

Celebrating Imagination

This year’s competition witnessed a remarkable surge in participation, with over 1,200 entries. Each submission was infused with humor, fantasy, and adventure, representing the rich imagination of children. Phileine's winning design, titled the “Sweet Monster Train,” features friendly, whimsical monsters intended to bring joy rather than fright.

A Unique Collaboration

Phileine collaborated with professional illustrator Jip Piet, who guided her in transforming her vision into a vibrant reality. The design was printed on large decal stickers, allowing for a strikingly creative presentation without the need for paint. This innovative approach resonates with the objective of NS, which is to inspire children to see train travel as an exciting adventure.

More Than Just a Train

At the train's unveiling at Utrecht’s Maliebaan station, Phileine, accompanied by her family, participated in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting alongside NS board member Daan Schutt. This event not only celebrates Phileine's art but also aims to encourage children to explore their imagination and view train journeys as magical experiences.

The NS Drawing Competition exemplifies the power of creativity in children and its ability to reshape everyday experiences, like train travel, into something enchanting. By giving children a platform to express themselves, NS is not just promoting train travel, but fostering a generation that values their creative instincts.
