A Heartwarming Collaboration: Local Students Celebrate Freedom Through Art

In a remarkable display of creativity and collaboration, pupils from three local schools have joined forces with renowned comic author Paul Bristow to produce a graphic novel that commemorates 80 years since the end of World War II. This inspiring project not only highlights the importance of freedom but also allows young voices to express their understanding of this key concept in today’s world.

Our Freedom: Then and Now

The graphic novel, titled "Our Freedom: Then and Now – Stories from Alexandria, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven," is a product of the creative energies from Vale of Leven Academy, Our Lady & St Patrick’s High School, and Dumbarton Academy. This initiative is part of a nationwide programme aiming to foster discussions around freedom among the youth. The students engaged deeply with the theme, exploring their perspectives through storytelling and artistic expression.

A Celebratory Launch

The launch event took place at Alexandria Library, attended by local councillors and students who celebrated their hard work and collaboration. Councillor William Rooney, the Convenor of Corporate Services, expressed his admiration for the project, stating, “As I worked my way through the pages, I was really impressed by the creativity and depth of thought shown by the pupils.” He encouraged the community to visit local libraries to explore the students’ interpretations of freedom.

Community Impact and Support

The Council’s Libraries and Arts & Heritage teams received a £15,000 grant to help bring this significant project to fruition, underscoring the commitment to fostering an appreciation of history and freedom through art. Vice-Convenor of Corporate Services, Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, commended the dedication shown by all participants, stating, “This project has brought together something memorable that everyone involved can take pride in.”

With the graphic novel now available at all West Dunbartonshire libraries, it stands as a testament to the creativity of young people and the power of community collaboration. This initiative not only enriches the local culture but also sparks meaningful conversations about freedom in contemporary society.
