A New Era for Birdwatching: Southern Africa's Transboundary Birding Route Unveiled

Southern Africa is poised to become a premier destination for birdwatchers around the globe with the launch of the Great Kavango Zambezi Birding Route. This groundbreaking initiative spans five countries—Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—and offers enthusiasts the chance to explore a remarkable variety of ecosystems.

A Haven for Bird Species

The newly announced route boasts an impressive array of approximately 650 endemic and migratory bird species, all within the world's largest conservation area, which is comparable in size to Germany and France combined. Birdwatchers will have the unique opportunity to traverse diverse habitats, including dry deserts, lush forests, and wetlands, while following ancient migratory paths along five major rivers: the Zambezi, Chobe, Kwando, Kavango, and Kafue.

During a recent press expedition, international birders documented an astounding 215 bird species within the region, including 43 species never recorded before by seasoned observers.
