A Powerful Brotherhood: Transforming Men's Mental Health Together
A remarkable initiative aimed at breaking down barriers surrounding men’s mental health is celebrating its first anniversary. Mankind, founded by Jordan Bishop, was created in response to rising suicide rates among men and a worrying decline in their mental health across the nation. This support group has successfully fostered an environment where men can share their struggles, find support, and prioritize their mental health.
A Safe Haven for Men
Mankind hosts weekly sessions at the Epic Golden Gloves Boxing Gym in Newark, where members engage in boxing for an hour followed by an open discussion. Since its inception, the group has multiplied its membership fivefold, growing from an initial gathering of just five to 26 men from various backgrounds. This transformation highlights the urgent need for supportive spaces where men can express themselves without fear of judgment.
Real Stories of Change
Among those positively impacted by Mankind is Neil Ford, who shared his poignant journey from despair to hope. After facing profound struggles and a failed suicide attempt, Neil found solace in the welcoming atmosphere of the group. His testimony reflects the healing power of community and the significance of having a support system, illustrating how Mankind has become a brotherhood that uplifts its members.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Impact
With aspirations to expand the group to multiple sessions each week, Mankind aims to offer its model across the UK, helping even more men struggling with mental health issues. Eysham Pickering, owner of Epic Golden Gloves gym, recognizes the substantial impact Jordan’s initiative is having on the local community. He emphasized that boxing not only serves as a physical outlet but also complements the emotional release during group discussions.
Join the Movement
A special anniversary session for Mankind is set for June 23 at 7 PM, inviting all interested individuals to participate and discover the supportive environment it offers. Jordan is also seeking sponsors to help fund future mental health initiatives, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to making a difference in men's lives.
This inspiring story sheds light on the importance of addressing men's mental health and the potent healing that can occur when individuals come together for mutual support. Mankind stands as a testament to resilience, hope, and the lasting bonds that emerge when we choose to “flip the script” and foster open discussions about mental health.
