A Remarkable Rescue: Teamwork Saves a Tangled Manatee

In a heartwarming display of collaboration and dedication, a team of wildlife experts has successfully rescued a manatee tangled in crab trap lines off the coast of Georgia. This extraordinary event unfolded over two days last week, showcasing the commitment of various organizations to protect marine wildlife.

The Call for Help

On July 29, Capt. Davis Galland received an urgent call about an entangled manatee in the Mackay and Hampton rivers near St. Simons Island. This incident marked a significant first for the state, as such a situation had never been reported before. Wildlife biologist Jessica Thompson, leading the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Marine Mammal Program, reported that the adult female manatee was tightly wrapped in fishing lines and buoy from a commercial crab pot, illustrating the dangers that marine creatures face.

A Multi-State Effort to Save a Life

Responding to the call, a specialized three-boat team consisting of representatives from Georgia's DNR, Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and two other rescue groups ventured into challenging conditions. The rescue was complicated by two smaller manatees lingering nearby, but the team showed determination and skill, employing techniques learned from disentangling dolphins and North Atlantic right whales. They worked tirelessly to free the manatee from the hazardous trapping gear before a looming storm forced them to retreat.

Hope for the Future

Thanks to their collective effort, the manatee was not only freed but also equipped with a satellite tracking tag. This development gives it and its dependent calf a fighting chance to thrive in their natural habitat and contribute to the wild population for years to come. “This successful outcome reflects what can be accomplished when organizations come together with a shared commitment to protecting marine wildlife,” remarked Monica Ross, director of Manatee Research and Conservation at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute.
