In a remarkable display of resilience and community spirit, Churchtown Primary School in Southport has turned profound grief into uplifting hope by winning the prestigious Inspiring Play Award at the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. This recognition comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving the loss of two students, Alice da Silva Aguiar and Bebe King, nearly two years ago.
Rallying Together for a Cause
Following the heartbreaking events surrounding the loss of their peers, the school community united to raise £380,000 through various pupil-driven fundraising activities. The funds will be used to construct a new playground that honors Alice and Bebe’s memory, promoting the importance of unstructured, child-led play, which is essential for young children's growth and development.
A Playground Built on Love and Community Spirit
Headteacher Jinnie Payne expressed that the playground signifies more than just a structure; it represents the collective effort and love of the entire Southport community. Payne stated, “This is for all for the community – the Southport community – but also nationally, in terms of the amount of gifts and money we had to build the playground for the children at Churchtown.”
Deputy head Tom Dowd echoed these sentiments, highlighting how the project has positively transformed the school environment. "The children are so proud to be part of it... it has just transformed our playtimes," he remarked.

The Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference Awards, which celebrated the awardees, focused on how schools and individuals utilize the power of sport to foster inclusive environments that enhance children's health and wellbeing.
