A School's Inspiring Journey to Inclusivity: Orchard Manor's Award Triumph

In a remarkable display of resilience and innovation, Orchard Manor School in Dawlish, Devon, has been honored with the prestigious Building Belonging Award at the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. This accolade recognizes the school's commitment to creating an inclusive environment for its students, particularly those with communication and interaction needs, including autism.

Transforming Challenges into Triumphs

Following a challenging merger and a previous inadequate Ofsted rating in 2020, Orchard Manor School undertook a transformative journey. Under the leadership of head of Physical Education Catherine Kilburn, the school developed a personalized curriculum aimed at meeting the diverse needs of its pupils. From sensory activities to exam-level PE and leadership programmes, the school has placed a strong emphasis on inclusive sports and play.

A Community-Focused Approach

Headteacher Nicola Jones expressed immense pride in the school's achievements, acknowledging the hard work of both students and staff. Kilburn noted, “It’s about the fact that we’ve been able to be creative in PE and offer something for every single child,” emphasizing the importance of finding inspiration for each student. This collaborative effort is a testament to the dedication of the entire team, propelling Orchard Manor to new heights in educational inclusivity.

Celebrating Inclusivity in Sports

The Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference Awards, attended by prominent figures from the sporting community, aimed to spotlight the positive impact of sports on children's health and well-being. Former England women’s rugby captain Sarah Hunter underscored the significance of recognizing grassroots efforts in sports, suggesting that such recognition is vital for nurturing future sports stars.

As schools like Orchard Manor continue to pave the way for inclusion in sports, it serves as a powerful reminder of how commitment and creativity can foster a nurturing and empowering environment for all children. The collective efforts at Orchard Manor reflect a bright future for inclusivity within schools and communities at large.
