A Sweet Milestone: The Birth of the Reading 100 Chocolate Bar

The University of Reading has recently unveiled the Reading 100, a groundbreaking chocolate bar created to celebrate the institution’s 100th anniversary. This remarkable achievement in British food science marks only the second instance in history where a chocolate bar has been made using home-grown cocoa in Britain.

A Labor of Love

The project was led by Maha Khan, a master’s student specializing in food security, who took on the ambitious task of personally harvesting, fermenting, and processing the cocoa. Under the guidance of food science experts, the finished product integrates home-grown cocoa, along with British sugar and milk. Khan expressed her joy about following the entire chocolate-making process, emphasizing the dedication and skill required to produce the chocolate that graces the shelves today.

The Story Behind the Cocoa

The cocoa for the Reading 100 was sourced from the University of Reading’s International Cocoa Quarantine Centre, an institution dedicated to preserving cocoa plant varieties and ensuring the safe international movement of cocoa. This facility plays a critical role in preventing pests and diseases from spreading across cocoa-growing regions, effectively placing the UK at the forefront of the global chocolate trade.

The Bigger Picture

Professor Carol Wagstaff, director of AgriFood Futures at the university, highlighted the intricate global supply chain that supports the UK chocolate industry, relying on smallholder farmers from regions vulnerable to climate change. This highlights not just a triumph in local production but also a reminder of the importance of international trade in providing economic stability for farmers worldwide.

The unveiling of the Reading 100 is more than just a celebration of a chocolate treat; it encapsulates a century of British research and innovation focused on agriculture, food production, and climate science. It serves as a poignant reminder that behind every chocolate bar lies a comprehensive story—a story of sustainability, scientific excellence, and a commitment to safeguarding global cocoa crops for future generations.
