A Teacher's Innovative Approach to History Gains National Recognition
In a remarkable celebration of educators who inspire and engage, Alasdair Bright, a dedicated teacher from St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Kenton, has been distinguished as the North East winner in the inaugural Inspiring History Teacher Awards. This recognition not only highlights his exceptional contributions to education but also underscores his innovative approach to teaching history through community engagement.
Bringing Local Heritage to Life
Alasdair's heritage walking tours of Newcastle have captivated both students and community members alike, with their translations into over 20 languages ensuring accessibility for all. His work, which has received acclaim from judges, emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in history education. Alasdair states, "We've tried to make it really inclusive - 20 languages people speak in our school community because we try to remove barriers." This initiative has fostered a sense of belonging and connection among students, local families, and the wider community.
Empowering Future Generations
For the past four years, Alasdair has also led the ‘Heritage Heroes’ pupil leadership group, where children actively research and learn about Newcastle's rich history. This program not only sparks interest in local heritage but also empowers students to take ownership of their learning. "Every year children apply as they are passionate about learning...which is pretty cool," he shares. Such initiatives cultivate a deep appreciation for history and help students understand their roots, important for personal growth and community integration.
A Vision for the Future
With an eye on the future, Alasdair remains committed to enhancing history education. Plans are underway for the establishment of a museum within the school and an archaeological dig on-site. His visionary approach is a testament to the strong curriculum and supportive environment fostered by the school's headteacher, Anne Bullerwell. "Our whole curriculum is so strong and why we’re leaders in so many different subject areas," he notes, revealing the school's commitment to educational excellence.
Alasdair's recognition is not merely an individual accomplishment; it embodies the collective efforts of a dedicated team and a vibrant school community. His work serves as a model for how history can be made engaging and relevant, ensuring that future generations appreciate the rich tapestry of their local heritage.
