A Vibrant Community Hub for LGBTQ+ Individuals Opens Its Doors in DeLand

A new beacon of support and camaraderie has arrived in DeLand, Florida, with the opening of the Volusia Pride Community Space in November 2024. Nestled in a nondescript strip mall near Stetson University, this center is more than just a building; it's a thriving community resource dedicated to uplifting the LGBTQ+ community.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

During a recent visit, the space buzzed with life as attendees gathered for an LGBTQ+ Senior Meet Up event. The center offers a variety of support groups and social activities aimed at fostering connection and friendship among residents. Helen Sylvester, who leads the seniors group along with her spouse Desiree, spoke about the importance of having a safe place to share experiences and learn together.

Engaging Events and Support

The Volusia Pride Community Center hosts a multitude of events ranging from educational talks on estate planning and pelvic health to monthly potluck dinners that encourage community participation. Heather McLean, vice president of Volusia Pride, expressed her enthusiasm for the center's ability to facilitate more engaging activities. "It’s really incredible, the amount of support groups and social events that we have here," she noted.

Fostering Community and Inclusion

Part of Volusia Pride's mission is to foster a sense of belonging and pride within the community. The center includes vibrant decor, such as a glittery rainbow floor, a small library, and recreational games, creating an inviting space for individuals to express their identities. With plans to add mental health counseling services in the future, the center is poised to be an invaluable resource for individuals seeking assistance or simply a place to connect.

As the Volusia Pride Community Space continues to expand its offerings, it stands as a testament to the power of community in supporting and celebrating diversity. For more information and to get involved, interested individuals can visit volusiapride.org or contact them at 386-232-8551.
