In a remarkable act of dedication and love for his community, Peter Manfield, a 73-year-old music teacher, took extraordinary measures to ensure that his beloved village pub, The Dog and Donkey, remains a cherished gathering place in Devon, England. Faced with the imminent sale of the pub, which has served as the social hub of the village for the past century, Manfield decided to remortgage his home to secure its future.
A Century of History
The Dog and Donkey, originally established as the Brittania Inn in 1926, has weathered wars and financial challenges, retaining its historical charm with original features like a beautiful fireplace and tiled floor. “You haven’t got history, that history of 100 years is gone, and when it’s gone, there’s no bringing it back,” Manfield lamented as he shared his resolve to keep the pub open.

Manfield's journey to save the pub led him to Mark Loftin, an aspiring bar manager he met serendipitously while getting a haircut. Despite having no prior experience running a pub, Loftin’s enthusiasm and shared vision with Manfield to maintain the pub's traditional atmosphere proved to be an invaluable partnership. “This was an amazing opportunity, especially to be involved with Pete,” Loftin said, expressing his commitment to preserving the pub’s essence.
