Abbey School Shines at Youth Sport Trust Awards: A Beacon of Leadership and Inclusivity

In a remarkable display of excellence, Abbey School has been honored with the Empowering Young Leaders Award during the prestigious 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards ceremony held at the Telford International Centre. This accolade celebrates the school's commitment to fostering leadership skills among its students, aged 6-19, who have moderate learning difficulties.

The Leadership Journey

Abbey School's approach to leadership development is innovative and inclusive. Every pupil takes on a 'Lion Leader' role, which allows them to engage in activities like organizing breakfasts, checking equipment, and leading physical education (PE) or sensory circuits. This hands-on methodology empowers students, teaching them essential life skills while providing them with valuable leadership experience in a supportive environment.

Celebrating Inclusivity in Sports

The school also hosts inclusive sports events where students take charge, showcasing their abilities and learning through teamwork and experience while adults' involvement remains focused solely on safety. Assistant headteacher Jill Newbolt expressed her pride in this recognition, emphasizing how it reflects the school's dedication to its mission and the positive impact it has on its students.

A National Recognition of Achievement

PE teacher Katie Crowley highlighted the significance of the award: "For our children to be recognised at a national level is important. It’s not only about us as a school but recognizing the tremendous progress the children have made in sports." This award serves as a testament to the hard work and perseverance of both the students and staff.

A Night of Celebration

The awards ceremony was a celebration of inclusivity, attended by notable figures such as former England women’s rugby captain Sarah Hunter and Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell. The event served as a platform to highlight the positive influence of sport on children’s health and well-being, demonstrating the potential of sports to inspire and create meaningful changes in young lives.

Campbell, who presented Abbey School with their award, reflected on the importance of believing in young people, recounting his own experience with a PE teacher who encouraged his dreams despite others' doubts. "Sometimes you only need one person to believe in you," he noted, encapsulating the spirit of encouragement that events like the Youth Sport Trust Awards aim to promote.

As Abbey School continues to lead by example, it is clear that the integration of sports and leadership training is not just shaping confident individuals but is also building a community geared towards inclusivity and empowerment for the future.
