Against All Odds: How Clare Hodgson Transformed Challenges into Triumphs on Ice

In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, Clare Hodgson has carved a path to becoming a double Inclusive Skating world champion, using her passion for ice skating as a means to overcome significant health challenges. At 28, Clare has not only reclaimed her place on the ice after a series of injuries but has also inspired others by sharing her journey through a documentary series.

The Journey Begins

Born in Keighley and raised in Harrogate, Clare faced bullying in school largely stemming from her physical and mental health challenges. However, everything changed when she discovered ice skating at her 15th birthday party. With a background in ballet, she found a new passion in skating, which would not only become a sport but a source of solace throughout her life.

Challenges and Triumphs

Clare's journey was not without hurdles. After being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at 18 and facing deteriorating health while studying geology at The University of Leeds, she found herself sidelined from skating entirely during the Covid pandemic. But upon reopening of the rinks, Clare's decision to join Billingham Forum Ice Arena marked a significant turning point. With a new coach and renewed focus, she quickly transitioned into the world of competitive skating.

A Bright Future Ahead

With incredible support from the skating community and her coach, Clare has achieved remarkable success in competitions, including winning multiple medals at both virtual and in-person world championships. Her achievements serve not just as personal milestones, but as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.

Community and Support

Tees Active, the charitable trust behind the ice arena, has played a vital role in Clare's journey, offering not only financial support but also a sense of belonging. Clare's story has been featured in the 'Reflections' documentary series, aimed at encouraging participation in sports and highlighting the importance of community support in the face of adversity.

A Message of Inspiration

As she prepares for upcoming competitions, including aspirations toward the Paralympics, Clare remains focused on raising awareness for her health conditions and inspiring others to pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles. "I want my story to show that skating is for everyone," she asserts. With unwavering determination, Clare Hodgson continues to glide ahead, turning her struggles into triumphs on the ice.
