Alexandria Women for Good Makes a Significant Impact with Grant for Local Tutoring

In a commendable act of philanthropy, Alexandria Women for Good has awarded a grant of nearly $14,000 to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, marking a notable milestone in the community's efforts to enhance literacy support for students. The grant, amounting to $13,973, was presented during a symbolic "big check" ceremony on April 30, showcasing the organization’s commitment to making a difference in local education.

Empowering Young Learners

The grant was nominated by Eleanor Trice, a dedicated volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium’s Book Buddies program. Trice emphasized the transformative effect that literacy support can have on young learners, stating, “I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods used in ATC’s Book Buddies program.” This program aims to support struggling readers and has been instrumental in fostering a love for reading among first graders and kindergarteners in the Alexandria area.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Thanks to the volunteer tutors’ efforts, approximately 300 students from all 14 public elementary schools in Alexandria are now receiving much-needed assistance in building their literacy skills. Mary Ann Solomon, an ATC board member, expressed gratitude for the grant, stating, “We’re kind of like the little engine that could in that these volunteers work with 300 kids putting them on the path to success.” With the support from the Alexandria Women for Good, the organization looks to broaden its impact, reaching even more students in the upcoming year.

A Community of Support and Connections

Alexandria Women for Good fosters a spirit of networking, service, and community among women in Alexandria. The organization not only provides quarterly grants but also hosts various community events designed to nurture local connections and support nonprofits. As efforts continue to meet their fundraising goals, additional women are encouraged to join this giving circle, enhancing the network of support available for local initiatives.

The next Gather & Grant event is set for Thursday, May 7, at Founders Hall in Old Town Alexandria, serving as an opportunity for women to engage with the community and explore local nonprofit initiatives competing for grant funding. This initiative exemplifies how collective action can have a substantial positive impact on local education and literacy.
