The Art on Your Doorstep project is a three-year initiative aimed at making art more accessible to local communities, encouraging engagement and appreciation of cultural heritage. Featured prominently in locations such as Croydon Minster and Queen's Gardens, these vibrant displays invite residents to experience world-class art in their everyday environments.
According to Hannah Widgington, exhibitions manager at the National Gallery, this initiative allows people to encounter famous artworks beyond the typical gallery setting. “The trail will offer a rare chance to encounter these works beyond the familiar gallery walls and weave them into everyday life,” she explains. This project not only highlights the artworks but also fosters community involvement by allowing local residents to contribute their thoughts and even select the pieces displayed.
A Broader Reach for Art Lovers
The displays in Croydon are just the beginning. The programme is set to continue its journey across the UK, with future locations planned for cities such as Torquay and Derry by 2026. As the project expands, it will also include free exhibitions in areas like Coulsdon and Thornton Heath. This approach promises to engage a wider audience, bringing art into community venues and public parks, making it an integral part of the local landscape.
The Creative Mile Brentford Art Trail, another aspect of this initiative, plans to collaborate with locals to determine unexpected locations for displaying the artworks. This ensures that the projects resonate with the community and enhance the cultural identity of each area visited.
