Ashton's Bright Future: A Major Regeneration Plan Takes Shape

In an exciting development for the residents of Ashton, Tameside council has officially purchased the Ladysmith Shopping Centre, marking a significant step in a comprehensive regeneration initiative aimed at revitalizing the town centre. This acquisition is part of a larger strategy to enhance public ownership of key sites, enabling swift and large-scale regeneration efforts.

Revitalization of the Town Centre

The Ladysmith Shopping Centre is positioned at the heart of Ashton-under-Lyne and will continue operating while a long-term masterplan is crafted. This development involves engaging with current retail and leisure tenants to create a modern, mixed-use town centre that incorporates residential spaces alongside retail and leisure facilities.

Transformational Projects on the Horizon

As part of the ambitious vision for the town, plans are underway to build 306 new homes on the site of the Ladysmith, with the majority of its retail offerings shifting to the nearby Arcades. This shift is designed to transform the Arcades into a vibrant shopping hub, featuring a cinema and other leisure facilities on the first floor. An additional 166 homes will also be included through smaller development projects across the area, enhancing the residential offerings of Ashton.

Investment in Public Spaces

The regeneration effort extends beyond just the shopping centre, as Ashton is also set to benefit from significant improvements to its public spaces. The Market Square, recently revitalized through a £10.8 million investment, now includes a modern public space and covered market designed for a variety of events and street food. This newly refurbished area aims to enhance foot traffic and community engagement throughout the week.

A Vision for the Future

The overarching masterplan aims to facilitate easier mobility throughout the town centre and enhance its allure, positioning Ashton as one of the UK's best-connected and investable locations. Tameside council has already secured £250 million in public investment, paving the way for more than 5,000 new homes and the creation of 3,000 new skilled jobs, fostering a dynamic and experience-oriented town centre.

Tameside council leader Eleanor Wills emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, "This acquisition is a statement of intent for Ashton and for Tameside as a whole. The residents of Ashton deserve to see meaningful change in their town centre, and this is us taking direct action to make it happen."

With the town hall restoration progressing, alongside developments in the market square and shopping centre, Ashton is on the verge of a transformation that promises to create a thriving community space and enhance the pride residents have in their town.
