Bishop’s Stortford has proudly received the Purple Flag award, marking a significant achievement for the town as it is now the only location in Hertfordshire to be honored with this accolade. The award, presented during a special ceremony in Norwich, recognizes the town's commitment to fostering a safe, vibrant, and well-managed evening and night-time economy.

The success of securing the Purple Flag is attributed to the collaborative efforts among various organizations, including town centre businesses, local councils, and the police. The Bishop’s Stortford Business Improvement District (BID) led the accreditation initiative with commendable support from East Herts District and Hertfordshire County Councils, along with notable community groups like the town’s Street Pastors, who are committed to enhancing safety during night hours.

Significance of the Purple Flag

The Purple Flag is an international program administered by the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM). It recognizes locations that provide an entertaining and safe night out. Karen Burton, joint BID manager, reflected on the award as not only a celebration of past efforts but also as an ongoing journey. She emphasized that the accreditation is subject to annual reviews, highlighting the importance of continuous improvement in creating a safer evening environment.

Key Initiatives and Future Plans

The assessment panel praised several initiatives that contributed to the award, including the introduction of Street Stewards, the enhancement of lighting in Devoils Lane, and the provision of safety training for local businesses. Madeleine Lees, the joint BID manager, expressed pride in the partnership between various stakeholders, indicating that collaborative efforts yield significant achievements. Looking ahead, both managers are excited about the plans to further enhance the night-time experience in Bishop’s Stortford.
