This year's Download Festival at Donington Park is setting a remarkable example of inclusivity and accessibility for the deaf community. Attendees will find a dedicated team of interpreters ready to enhance their festival experience by helping them "hear" the music through visual interpretation.

A Commitment to Accessibility

For months, a group of dedicated signers from Performance Interpreters has been painstakingly learning the lyrics to many of the songs that will be performed on various stages. With around 40 members of the deaf community reaching out to festival organizers ahead of time, the interpreters are prepared to meet demand by offering services across multiple stages, including the main Apex stage, where the iconic Guns N' Roses will headline.

Enhancing the Musical Experience

Interpreter Vicci Akroyd emphasized the importance of her role, stating that interpreters are connected to the sound tower to ensure an accurate interpretation. "We help people to feel the music," Akroyd explained. Positioned close to the front of the stage, interpreters not only translate lyrics but also convey the emotions and feelings of the performances. The vibrations from the wooden floors of accessible viewing platforms further enhance the experience, making it a truly immersive event for all attendees.
