Breaking Ground: Runwell Community Primary School's Groundbreaking Mental Health Initiative
In a significant stride towards enhancing mental health support for students, Runwell Community Primary School in Wickford has been awarded a £5,000 grant to bolster its mental health provision. This initiative comes as part of celebrations for Mental Health Awareness Week, marking a pivotal moment for the school and its community.
A Comprehensive Approach to Mental Wellbeing
The grant will facilitate access to myHappyMind, an NHS-commissioned program designed to instill positive mental wellbeing, resilience, confidence, and self-esteem among young learners. Deputy Headteacher Charlotte Castle expressed pride in the school's commitment to creating a supportive environment, saying, "Thanks to the new grant and our existing provision, our school is a space where children truly feel supported."
Empowering Students to Support One Another
As the program unfolds, Runwell Community Primary School will extend its mental health resources to its on-site nursery, incorporating an NHS-backed curriculum that not only benefits pupils but also offers an app with wellbeing resources for parents and caregivers. A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is the training of a select group of students, known as Happiness Heroes, who are equipped to help support their peers' wellbeing during the school day. One young ambassador remarked, “The training has been really fun. I think it’s important for everyone to feel happy, and I’m excited to help my friends and class feel good every day.”
Existing Support and Future Prospects
In conjunction with this new program, the school continues to provide a variety of wellbeing support services, including regular visits from therapeutic support dogs. This comprehensive mental health strategy not only aims to uplift students but also prepares them with the necessary skills to navigate their emotions and thrive in a supportive learning environment.
As this valuable initiative gains momentum, it illustrates a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in educational settings, providing a model for other schools to follow.
