Castlederg Celebrates a Bright Future with New £3 Million Sports Facility

The residents of Castlederg have reason to celebrate as they welcome the completion of a significant £3 million redevelopment at Mitchell Park. This state-of-the-art facility was officially unveiled by Councillor Ruairí McHugh, the outgoing Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, ushering in a new era for local sports and community engagement.

A Hub for Sports and Community Life

Funded by the UK Government, the redevelopment features a modern 3G playing pitch that will enable competitive soccer matches at all levels, complemented by a junior-sized GAA pitch and mini soccer pitches dedicated to youth football and recreational activities. This upgraded facility is not just about sports; it is a vital community hub designed to bring people together.

Significant Community Impact

Councillor McHugh expressed his enthusiasm regarding the positive effects this facility will have on local life. He emphasized the role that sports play in fostering community spirit, supporting young people, and encouraging overall health and wellbeing. “This enhanced playing provision will make those benefits more accessible and will have a hugely positive impact for residents of the Derg Ward,” he stated.

Ongoing Commitment to Enhancement

Ulster Unionist councillor Derek Hussey also lauded this development as good news for the community. He noted the importance of government funding from the Levelling Up Fund and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve facilities in the area. The Mitchell Park redevelopment is part of the broader Derg Active Project, aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and promoting health and economic opportunities.

With other phases of the Derg Active initiative already completed, including new public spaces and improved greenway connections, the Mitchell Park facility represents a significant step forward. It promises to serve both local sports clubs and residents for generations, marking Castlederg as a destination committed to community and sporting excellence.
