Celebrating 130 Years: A Vibrant Anniversary at Halifax Borough Market

This weekend, Halifax Borough Market invites the community to join in a grand celebration as it marks a remarkable 130 years of service. The historic Grade II listed building, completed in 1896, is undergoing refurbishment and transforming into a hub of activity that promises a memorable day for all attendees.

A Day Full of Activities

On Saturday, July 25, a variety of uplifting events will be held throughout the day, ensuring that there's something for everyone. The market will come alive with live music featuring a choir and a brass band, providing a festive atmosphere. Long-time market stalwart Les Cutts will lend his voice to commemorate this special occasion.

Unique Experiences Await

In addition to musical performances, the market will host a Record Fair at the Albany Arcade, linking back to one of the market's beloved regular events. Families can enjoy a dedicated Kid’s Trail organized by the Halifax Civic Trust, alongside engaging workshops such as a sketch workshop conducted by Shoreditch Sketcher, running from 10 am to noon.

For food enthusiasts, guided Food Tours will be available from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, offering a taste of the market's rich culinary offerings. Participants are encouraged to book their spots as both the sketch workshop and the food tours are expected to fill quickly due to high demand.

Exclusive Tours of the Streets In The Sky

One highlight of the market’s anniversary celebration is the popular tour of the famous Streets In The Sky. This unique tour reveals two hidden terrace streets of houses constructed above the market’s roof, originally built for market traders. The tours have proven so popular that one session has already sold out, with tickets disappearing within minutes.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Regeneration, Coun Keith Ingle, reported that nearly 100 attendees have participated in five tours this month alone, with additional tours planned for late July and August. This level of engagement showcases the community's excitement for this historic market and its offerings.

The Halifax Borough Market's 130th anniversary is not just a celebration of its past but also a compelling reminder of its vital role in the local community today. As attendees engage in music, art, and food, they contribute to the ongoing legacy of this cherished institution.
