Celebrating a Legacy: Gillian Sewell’s Inspiring Journey at YMCA Derbyshire

After an impactful 35-year career, Gillian Sewell, the chief executive of YMCA Derbyshire, is preparing to retire, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of positive change for the young people in her community. Her work at YMCA has not only enriched lives but has also inspired a growing commitment to addressing social inequalities in Derby.

A Journey of Dedication

Gillian joined Leicester YMCA in 1992 as a youth and community student and part-time receptionist. Over the years, her passion for helping young people saw her rise through various positions, culminating in her role as CEO at YMCA Derbyshire in 2020. Throughout her tenure, she has overseen vital programs aimed at improving the lives of young individuals, fostering a sense of belonging, and advocating for their growth.

Achievements and Impact

Under Gillian's leadership, YMCA Derbyshire was recognized as YMCA of the Year in 2022, a testament to the exceptional team she built and the programs implemented to support youth development. Gillian expressed that the most rewarding aspect of her job has been witnessing the positive transformations in the lives of young people, many of whom have gone on to pursue successful careers.

Advocating for Equality and Young Futures

One of Gillian's notable initiatives is the "Tale of Two Cities" campaign launched earlier this year. This campaign aims to address the stark contrasts of prosperity and child poverty in Derby, motivating various sectors to unite in improving life chances for children. By generating significant discussions and partnerships amongst businesses and community organizations, this campaign is paving the way for a collaborative approach to tackle inequality.

A Look to the Future

Although Gillian is retiring from her position, she sees this as an opportunity for new adventures, including her upcoming role as High Sheriff in 2027. Her commitment to supporting Derby and its residents continues, and her departure marks the beginning of a new chapter where she hopes to foster community engagement in different capacities.

As Gillian steps down, she leaves behind not just a legacy of leadership at YMCA Derbyshire but also an enduring commitment to uplift the community. Her vision for Derby remains hopeful as she emphasizes the potential of its people and the importance of collective effort in ensuring a brighter future for all.
