Celebrating Inspirational Youth: Sunderland's Young Achievers Shine
The Sunderland Young Achievers’ Awards recently celebrated the incredible talents and contributions of young individuals in the region, with the Sandhill View Deaf Resource group taking home the top honour. This annual event, organized by Together for Children, has been highlighting the remarkable achievements of young people for over three decades, creating a platform for them to shine.
Recognizing Courage and Creativity
This year's awards showcased the spirit of determination and creativity among the youth. Councillor Michael Butler emphasized the importance of these stories, noting, "The Sunderland Young Achievers’ Awards demonstrate what is possible when determination, kindness and creativity come together." The Sandhill View Deaf Resource group was particularly commended for their efforts in raising awareness about deaf culture and British Sign Language (BSL), promoting inclusivity within their school and community.
Meet the Inspiring Award Recipients
The ceremony, held at the Fire Station, honored a diverse array of talents. Daisy May Knight received the Youth Voice Award for her establishment of the ‘Siblings of Stars’ bereavement support group after experiencing the loss of her brother. Additionally, Oliver Hughes won the Music Award, using drumming as a coping mechanism during his family's challenging times. Lola Mae Stephenson, only 11 years old, was named the Young Health and Wellbeing Champion for her dedication to fundraising and volunteer efforts that support homeless and bereaved individuals.
A Night of Community Support and Celebration
The event united many community members and organizations, including sponsors from Gentoo, the NHS North East, and Sunderland College. Performances by local artists, including the Castle View School Choir and Northern Daughters, added a festive atmosphere to the celebration, further embodying the community spirit that the awards aim to recognize.
Reflecting on the event, Simon Marshall, Director of Children's Services, expressed his admiration for the resilience and achievements of the young people. "Every story we have celebrated at this year's awards reflects not only individual achievement, but the strength of our communities," he remarked.
