Celebrating Leadership and Inclusivity: Abbey School Shines at National Awards
In a remarkable recognition of commitment to empowering young minds, Abbey School has been awarded the Empowering Young Leaders Award at the prestigious 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. This accolade, received during a ceremony held at the Telford International Centre, highlights the school's dedication to fostering leadership skills among its 220 students, aged 6 to 19, with moderate learning difficulties.
A New Approach to Leadership
At Abbey School, leadership begins in the classroom. Every pupil is encouraged to take on a ‘Lion Leader’ role, allowing them to engage in activities such as organizing breakfast, checking equipment, and leading physical education (PE) or sensory circuit sessions. This hands-on approach not only nurtures responsibility but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaborative learning.
Encouraging Inclusion Through Sport
Inclusive sports events at Abbey School further exemplify the institution's commitment to leadership and participation. Here, pupils are given the opportunity to lead activities, with adult supervision maintained strictly for safety purposes. This innovative environment allows students to learn through experience, encouraging personal growth and teamwork.
Voices of Inspiration
Assistant headteacher Jill Newbolt expressed her pride in the recognition, stating, “It’s wonderful to be recognised like this because it goes to everything that we do at the school.” PE teacher Katie Crowley echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the award for the children: “For our children to be recognised at a national level is important. It’s not necessarily us as a school or the teachers, it’s more to recognise the things that the children do.”
Celebrating Positive Change
Attended by industry luminaries, including former England women’s rugby captain Sarah Hunter and Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell, the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Conference Awards served not only to honor achievements but also to inspire further positive change through sport. Darren Campbell remarked on the importance of recognizing those working diligently to inspire young people, reinforcing the impact that belief and support from educators can have on a child's future.
This annual event celebrates the achievements of schools, trusts, and individuals who have leveraged the power of sport to foster inclusivity and enhance the health and wellbeing of children. As grappling with challenges becomes part of the educational journey, institutions like Abbey School are leading the way in crafting brighter futures through innovative approaches in education and sport.
