Celebrating Resilience and Achievement: The Inspiring Star Awards at Bradford College

On 24th February, Bradford College held its annual Star Awards to honor the remarkable achievements of apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week 2026. The event, held at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford, not only recognized individual excellence but also celebrated the resilience and dedication of students who exemplify the spirit of vocational training.

A Night of Recognition and Inspiration

The Star Awards brought together students, staff, families, and local employers in a vibrant atmosphere filled with hope and inspiration. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of numerous awards, including the prestigious ‘CBRE Apprentice of the Year’ awarded to Tegan Durkin. Her journey is particularly noteworthy, having faced significant health challenges yet remaining committed to her education and personal growth.

Outstanding Achievements Amid Challenges

Tegan, who works at The Poplars Dental Practice, expressed her surprise and gratitude upon winning the top accolade. "I can’t believe I won! I’d 100% recommend an apprenticeship. You get real hands-on experience while you study, and the support from the tutors and employers is just great!” she remarked, highlighting the importance of a supportive learning environment.

In addition to Tegan, Nida Hayat of St Philip’s CofE Primary School received the ‘Adult Apprentice of the Year’ award for her high-quality work despite balancing her responsibilities at home. Moreover, Joseph Worth was recognized for his determination in the award category ‘Breaking Barriers’ for exemplifying resilience in meeting college needs.

The Future Workforce

Alina Khan, Vice Principal of EDI & Student Experience, commended the apprentices for embodying the essence of vocational training. "You represent the very best of what apprenticeships offer: talent developed through opportunity, skill built through hard work, and growth achieved through lived experience,” she stated, reaffirming the critical role that apprenticeships play in shaping the future workforce.

The event was part of a broader celebration across the country during National Apprenticeship Week, which aims to underscore the positive impact of apprenticeships on communities and the economy.

Promoting Local Talent and Partnerships

Several additional awards were presented to acknowledge exemplary apprenticeship partners, further emphasizing the community's commitment to skills development. Northern Pump Supplier Ltd received the ‘Apprenticeship Employer of the Year’ award, recognizing their dedication to fostering local talent.

The evening concluded with an inspiring address from Chris Leahy, Business Unit Leader at CBRE, who encouraged the apprentices to embrace their journey and contribute to their organizations. "You are the future of our organisations. Embrace your apprenticeship, do everything you can, and have fun," he said, ending the event on a hopeful note.

As we reflect on the successes celebrated at the Bradford College Star Awards, it is clear that these inspiring stories of resilience and achievement remind us of the power of education and the significant role of apprenticeships in building a stronger future.
