City of Vernon Makes Strides Towards Meeting Housing Goals

The City of Vernon is making significant progress in its ambitious plan to build nearly 1,850 new housing units over the next five years, as revealed in a recent update delivered to the council. This development comes in response to the Housing Supply Act introduced by the provincial government, aimed at addressing the growing housing shortage in British Columbia.

Impressive Early Achievements

In a report presented by senior planner Caitlyn Wiltsie, it was noted that Vernon has achieved an impressive 93 percent of its first-year housing target within just six months. The update showed that from September 2025 to February 2026, the city issued occupancy for 270 housing units, with only 12 units demolished, leading to a net increase of 258 new housing units. This success stems largely from the completion of three multi-family development projects, which accounted for over half of the housing results.

Strategic Actions to Enhance Housing Availability

The city's proactive approach includes updating the Official Community Plan to foster residential density, developing interactive tools to improve land use accessibility, and submitting grant applications to streamline processes. Additionally, the city is focused on outreach efforts aimed at empowering all stakeholders, including residents, realtors, and builders, to play an active role in creating housing solutions.

Community Response and Future Outlook

Council member Brian Guy expressed optimism regarding these developments, emphasizing the positive mix of housing types and affordability being introduced. However, he also acknowledged the potential challenges posed by recent changes in funding, which could impact future progress. Despite these hurdles, the current trajectory signifies a commendable start to the city’s housing initiative, marking a hopeful outlook for the community.
