In a heartfelt display of community spirit, Peter Manfield, a 73-year-old music teacher and musician, recently remortgaged his home to save The Dog and Donkey, a beloved village pub in Devon, England. With a rich history spanning 100 years, this pub has served as the heart of the community, and Manfield's personal sacrifice underscores the strong connections that local establishments foster.

A Heartfelt Decision

Faced with the prospect of losing this cherished institution to a highest bidder sale, Manfield made the difficult decision to invest in its future. Having moved to the village in 1997, he could not imagine living with the regret of seeing the pub replaced by a block of apartments. “To lose (the village’s) heart would’ve been catastrophic,” he stated. His concern reflects a deep understanding of how such establishments are woven into the fabric of local life.

Finding the Right Management

After securing ownership for approximately £270,000, Manfield was on the lookout for someone to run the pub until serendipity intervened. During a haircut, he met Mark Loftin, who expressed his interest in assuming the role of bar manager despite having no previous experience in the industry. This partnership turned out to be a perfect fit, with both men sharing the vision of maintaining the pub’s traditional essence.
