Community Radio Takes Center Stage with State-of-the-Art Studio Opening

Last Friday marked a significant milestone for the Good News Community Radio (GNCR) with the official launch of its new digital studio located near King Shaka Airport. The event, graced by Deputy Minister in the Presidency Kenny Morolong, highlighted the station's role in promoting community engagement and social cohesion through media.

A Vision for Community Media

The launch ceremony attracted various dignitaries, including eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba, and was celebrated with music, speeches, and prayer, all emphasizing the positive impact of community media. Deputy Minister Morolong praised GNCR's commitment to fostering hope, unity, and active community participation. He stated, “Today we celebrate partnership, perseverance, and the vital role community radio plays in strengthening social democracy." This acknowledgment celebrates the dedication of the station since its founding in 1995.

Empowering the Community Through Broadcasting

Alongside its rich history as a faith-based radio ministry, GNCR has evolved into a significant platform for community voices, currently operated by 37 volunteers, among which are two professional journalists. Station manager Michelle Coetzee articulated the station's mission to provide content that supports families, promotes children, and delivers important news and information to its listeners. Broadcasting on 93.6 FM, the station caters to a diverse audience, offering multilingual programming in English, isiZulu, Afrikaans, Hindi, and Tamil.

The new digital studio is designed not only to enhance production quality but also to create opportunities for aspiring media students to gain invaluable experience in broadcasting. Coetzee emphasized the potential for growth and development this upgrade will facilitate, reinforcing GNCR’s role as a vital educational resource in the community.
