Community Rallies to Save Lives with Swimming Programme

The Sunshine Coast Survival Swimming Programme in Kenton-on-Sea is actively seeking volunteers as it gears up for another impactful year in 2026. The initiative is committed to teaching essential water safety skills to local children, aiming to prevent future tragedies from drowning incidents.

A Response to Tragedy

This life-saving programme was initiated after a tragic New Year’s Eve accident in 2023 that resulted in the loss of four young lives due to drowning. Since its inception, the programme has made remarkable strides, providing beginner and advanced survival swimming sessions that equip children with practical skills essential for safety in water.

Success Stories from the Programme

In just a year, the programme successfully conducted 21 sessions, which saw hundreds of local learners gaining essential swimming skills. Advanced learners have even progressed to swimming in the Kariega River, tackling real-life water challenges such as currents and uneven riverbeds. The initiative proudly graduated seven students who received certificates of completion, marking a significant achievement in their journey toward water safety.

Call for Volunteer Support

As the programme looks to expand its reach and impact, it urgently needs more volunteer instructors. The members of the programme highlighted the crucial role that volunteers play in reducing drowning risks within the community. “Without more volunteers, we cannot expand or sustain these lessons,” they stated. They invite confident swimmers who can dedicate a few afternoons each month to join their team, with free training provided to all volunteers.

This initiative not only saves lives but also fosters a sense of community involvement and responsibility towards safety. The Sunshine Coast Survival Swimming Programme exemplifies how collective efforts can pave the way for a safer future. Those interested in contributing to this noble cause are encouraged to reach out and join in the mission to protect lives through essential swimming skills.
