Community Spirit Shines Bright This Ramadan in Manchester

As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds, community gatherings and heartfelt acts of generosity take center stage, especially at the Alfurqan Islamic Centre in Manchester. Abdillahi Muhammed, a dedicated member of the mosque's management team, shares the remarkable efforts being made to support those in need during this significant time.

Feeding the Community

During Ramadan, the Alfurqan Islamic Centre opens its doors to feed around 300 people daily, creating a welcoming environment for individuals from various walks of life, including students, families, and asylum seekers. Abdillahi emphasizes the importance of community and togetherness, stating, "It's the vibe and environment that attracts people. They feel that community and togetherness, it's a different type of feeling that you can't explain."

The Essence of Ramadan

As Muslims around the world engage in fasting and worship during this month, the mosque focuses not only on logistics but also on reminding the community of the spiritual significance of Ramadan. Abdillahi encourages individuals to reflect on their behavior and character during this time, advocating for the development of good habits that can extend well beyond the month.

A Culinary Gathering

Just a short distance away on the lively Curry Mile, local restaurants are preparing for a surge in guests ready to break their fast. Mo Khader, owner of Jafra, a restaurant specializing in Palestinian cuisine, notes the unique atmosphere this season brings. "Ramadan is a nice atmosphere. People meet here and break fast together, it's beautiful to see," he shared.

Hope for a Successful Season

Despite the increased pressure this year, with many diners wanting to share the same moment of breaking fast, there is optimism among restaurant owners. Mo reflects on last year’s struggles but believes that favorable timings and the holiday spirit will encourage more families to dine out. "I think this year it's going to be different; the timings might help us," he adds hopefully.

As Ramadan progresses, the collective spirit of giving and community connection continues to uplift those in Manchester, demonstrating the power of coming together during this sacred period. The warmth of shared meals and the emphasis on compassion highlight the beauty and significance of this month.
