Community Spirit Soars as Good News Community Radio Unveils New Studio

In an exciting development for local media, Good News Community Radio (GNCR) has officially launched its state-of-the-art studio near King Shaka Airport. The inauguration ceremony, held last Friday, saw the presence of Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, alongside distinguished members of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) board, who generously donated the new digital studio.

A Celebration of Community and Media

The event was marked by a vibrant atmosphere, featuring uplifting music, heartfelt prayers, and powerful speeches that underscored the vital role of community media. Dignitaries, including eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba, gathered to acknowledge and celebrate the station’s unique contribution to the South African media landscape.

Promoting Hope and Unity

Morolong emphasized the importance of community radio in fostering hope, unity, and active participation among listeners. “Today we celebrate partnership, perseverance and the vital role community radio plays in strengthening social democracy, building social cohesion and encouraging active participation within our communities,” he stated, highlighting the station's commitment to addressing the concerns of its audience.

Building a Stronger Community Through Radio

Founded in 1995, GNCR has evolved from a faith-based Christian radio ministry into a cornerstone of community broadcasting. With 37 dedicated volunteers and access to a diverse array of programming, including multilingual shows in English, isiZulu, Afrikaans, Hindi, and Tamil, GNCR serves an inclusive audience across the iLembe district and parts of KZN.

Empowering Future Generations

Station manager Michelle Coetzee expressed enthusiasm for the upgraded digital studio, noting that it will enhance production quality and provide valuable opportunities for media students to gain hands-on broadcasting experience. “We are a Christian community-of-interest radio station, so we preach the gospel through sermon programmes. We also focus on shows that build families, support children and provide news, financial information and sports coverage,” Coetzee explained.

The launch of this new studio not only represents a significant milestone for GNCR but also reinforces the essential role that community radio plays in promoting social engagement and unity. As GNCR continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of its listeners, the community is sure to benefit from the wealth of knowledge, hope, and inspiration that this station aims to deliver.
