Cumbria's Economic Growth Celebrated: A Year of Success and Innovation

In a significant milestone for economic development, Enterprising Cumbria is proudly celebrating its first anniversary. Launched in July last year, this initiative has successfully advanced the mission of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, focusing on business support, skills development, and sustainable investment.
Bold Strategies and Community Involvement
According to Isobel Brown, programme director, the organization's first year has been marked by noteworthy achievements. “We’ve launched a bold new economic strategy, secured significant funding, and supported hundreds of businesses and individuals across Cumbria," she remarked. The 'Going for Growth Economic Strategy' was developed in consultation with over 400 local stakeholders, reflecting a community-driven approach to ensuring a sustainable and vibrant economic future.
Significant Investments and Support for Local Businesses
Enterprising Cumbria has delivered nearly £6 million in local investments through various programs aimed at supporting skills development, promoting net zero initiatives, and assisting businesses. An upcoming Connect to Work programme, set to launch in 2026, is anticipated to provide an additional £10 million to enhance job security for residents.
The Cumbria Accelerator programme played a crucial role in the past year, providing expert-led, fully funded support to start-ups and small to medium enterprises (SMEs). Over 700 businesses utilized the service last year, with more than 270 new ventures launched, accompanied by nearly £50,000 awarded in start-up grants.
Empowering Learners Through Skills Bootcamps
Moreover, the Skills Bootcamps initiative has already supported over 1,000 learners, equipping them with vital skills to either transition into new careers or grow existing businesses. Kelly McAlone, the programme lead, expressed her enthusiasm for the numerous inspiring success stories that emerged, highlighting the transformative impact of these boot camps on participants, many of whom transitioned from unemployment into thriving careers.
Building a Future for Young People
Cumbria Careers Hub has dedicated efforts over the past year to empower young people by coordinating support across schools, colleges, parents, and employers. Cath Dutton, strategic careers hub manager, noted their commitment to fostering confidence and ambition in young individuals, stating that they supported 54 institutions with targeted training for over 150 educators.
Commitment to Clean Growth and Decarbonisation
In terms of environmental impact, Enterprising Cumbria is also advancing the region's role in clean energy and industrial decarbonization efforts. The initiative is collaborating with the Government and industry to explore opportunities at Pioneer Park in Moorside, identified as a key clean energy development site. With a net-zero investment pipeline valued at £8.7 billion, Cumbria aims to set a standard for sustainable growth.
Looking ahead, Isobel Brown emphasized the organization's ongoing commitment to delivering inclusive and sustainable growth through continued partnerships. The celebration of their first anniversary marks not just a reflection on their accomplishments but also lays the groundwork for a thriving economic future in Cumbria.
