Devon County Council Achieves Remarkable Progress in Care Services for Young People
Devon County Council has received commendable feedback from Ofsted inspectors, highlighting significant advancements in services for care leavers. This positive appraisal comes after a recent inspection that underscored the authority's commitment to prioritizing children’s welfare, particularly following the new administration's shift in focus after the May elections.
Ofsted's Praise and Recognition
In a letter to the council, Ofsted inspectors expressed appreciation for the “greater clarity,” “greater effort,” and “a more consistent service” being evident in the care services provided. Council Leader Councillor Julian Brazil welcomed these remarks, emphasizing the commitment to placing children at the forefront of local governance. He noted, “The changes we’ve been putting in place are now beginning to have a positive effect in supporting the most vulnerable in Devon.”
Improvements and Achievements
Ofsted's review marks a significant turnaround since their last visit in October 2024. The inspectors recognized the council's deliberate efforts to secure safe and stable housing for care leavers and improve opportunities for them in education and employment. The council's strong collaboration with housing providers has yielded tangible outcomes, such as increased placements in social housing and innovative support measures like rent guarantees and deposit schemes.
A Strong Future for Care Leavers
The report also highlights rising numbers of care-experienced young people transitioning to university, thanks to the recruitment of specialist advisers and supporting staff who have established robust relationships with the youth. Councillor Richard Jefferies, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, remarked on the necessity of maintaining this momentum, acknowledging the work of Personal Advisers who have shown unwavering dedication to the young individuals they serve.
While challenges persist, including the need for improved accommodation options and more timely risk assessments, the foundation laid by Devon County Council demonstrates their unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of care-experienced young people. With sustained efforts and the endorsement from Ofsted, the council aims to build upon this success, ensuring a brighter future for all children in their care.
