Discover the Thriving Food Scene in Torfaen: New Directory Launches

A new initiative is lighting up the culinary landscape of Torfaen, with the unveiling of the Torfaen Good Food Directory at the recent Food Summit held at Greenmeadow Community Farm. This comprehensive guide encompasses a variety of food and drink businesses, including independent cafés, family farms, artisan producers, street food traders, and refill shops, showcasing the richness of local offerings.

A Step Towards Sustainability

Councillor Sue Morgan, who oversees sustainability and waste, emphasized the impact of collaboration in transforming community food practices. She stated, "Friday's summit shows the power of partnerships in transforming how we grow, share and value food in Torfaen." The directory is seen as a vital resource for residents seeking access to local, affordable, and sustainable food options, while also boosting the success of enterprises that contribute to the community.

Community Engagement at the Food Summit

The Food Summit attracted over 200 attendees, including residents, school pupils, businesses, and community organizations. It highlighted the efforts of the Torfaen Food Partnership and the benefits of initiatives like the Torfaen Food Trails, which encourage participation in growing, cooking, and tasting events throughout the area.

Support for Local Businesses

Feedback from local business owners reflects the positive atmosphere surrounding this initiative. Holly Ivany from Llantarnam Arts Grange Café noted, "We’ve been working with the Food4Growth Team for some time now, and have gone from strength to strength with their support." This illustrates the collaborative spirit fueling growth within the Torfaen food community.

Accessing the Good Food Directory

The Torfaen Good Food Directory is not only available for online viewing and download, but printed copies will also be distributed at various locations, ensuring accessibility for all residents. The initiative is part of a broader strategy funded by the UK Government, amounting to £1,299,415 through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, aimed at increasing the availability of locally produced affordable food and tackling food insecurity sustainably.
