Discover the UK's First Ever Sauna Theatre: A Unique Blend of Art and Wellness

This summer, Edinburgh will be home to an exciting new concept: the UK's first sauna theatre, presented by Sauna Theatre at the Summerhall arts venue. This innovative project aims to merge the enriching experiences of art and culture with the health benefits of sauna, promising an unparalleled experience for visitors.

A Revolutionary Experience

The pop-up sauna will offer a dynamic programme of events, including a literary salon and a "morning sauna rave," inviting participants to relax in swimwear while engaging with a range of performances. Co-creative directors James Grieve and Lucy Osborne expressed their excitement about bringing this concept to life, emphasizing the inherent joy that combines the art of theatre with the restorative benefits of sauna.

What to Expect at Sauna Theatre

The Sauna Theatre will accommodate 80 people in a horseshoe seating arrangement, surrounding a central stove, creating an intimate atmosphere for audiences to deeply engage with the performances. Among the scheduled events are “Aufguss x The Waves,” a unique interpretation of Virginia Woolf's work, and “Mysteries Of The Picts,” which delves into the rich history of ancient Scotland.

Transforming the Experience of Theatre

Grieve noted that while sauna theatres have long been popular in parts of Europe, such as Italy and Scandinavia, this initiative introduces a novel approach to the UK theatre scene. The integration of sauna into the theatrical experience presents a new frontier for artists and audiences alike, promoting a sense of togetherness and imaginative exploration.

The Vision Behind the Project

Sam Gough, chief executive of Summerhall Arts, highlighted the collaborative spirit driving this ambitious project. Describing it as a “brilliant, brave and fun programme,” Gough believes that the sauna theatre will offer a pathway for attendees to enjoy creative work while benefiting from the relaxation that comes with sauna use. This innovative approach not only enhances the cultural landscape of Edinburgh but also invites a fresh perspective on wellness and community engagement.

Tickets for this one-of-a-kind experience go on sale soon, and with the promise of a unique blend of art and relaxation, it is an event not to be missed. As audiences prepare to enjoy all the creative wonders of the Fringe, they can look forward to a refreshing twist on traditional theatre—one that nourishes both body and mind.
