Discover the UK's Hidden Gems: Why Staycations Are the New Way to Travel

As travel dynamics shift in 2023, a recent report reveals the UK is emerging as a favoured destination for holidays, with an increasing number of adults opting for local escapes. The annual Staycation Index Report by Sykes Holiday Cottages showcases the top 50 most sought-after staycation spots, with Cornwall's St Ives leading the way.

The Rise of Domestic Travel

This year, nearly 40 percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed plan to take their main holiday within the UK, marking a significant increase from previous years. This trend is especially noticeable among the younger generation, with 53 percent of Gen Z expressing a preference for UK holidays.

A Variety of Destinations

The report highlights a diverse range of locations gaining popularity, from coastal towns to rural retreats and national parks. The picturesque village of Bamburgh in Northumberland secured the second position, while Bourton-on-the-Water and Salcombe gained recognition for their rising status. The adaptability of the British landscape continues to appeal, showcasing specific experiences that resonate with holidaymakers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Factors Influencing Travel Choices

With 78 percent of respondents yearning for a UK getaway, the allure of scenic beauty, cultural richness, and favorable memories play crucial roles in destination selection. Coastal areas are particularly appealing, with 65 percent of travelers prioritising them for their serenity and charm.

Younger Travelers Leading the Way

James Shaw, Chief Commercial Officer at Sykes Holiday Cottages, emphasizes the influence of younger travelers on this trend. He notes that Gen Z is increasingly drawn to experience-driven trips that offer a rich blend of scenery and culture, allowing them to explore multiple destinations within a single holiday.

As we navigate through a time of uncertainty in international travel, the data indicates a shift towards appreciating the local beauty of the UK. The findings provide a hopeful outlook for the travel industry and hint at a new wave of tourism focused on homegrown experiences.
