Discover the Untold Story Behind Swanage's Water Supply
In a remarkable blend of community history and personal passion, Dorset historian David J. Hawkings has released a new book titled 'The Tower on the Hill', shedding light on the intricate story of Swanage's water supply. Through meticulous research and engaging storytelling, Hawkings aims to inspire others to explore the histories that define their local landscapes.
From Dartmoor to Dorset: A Historian's Journey
David's journey into the depths of local history began in his youth as he roamed the watercourses of Dartmoor. His deep interest led him to author his first book, 'Water From The Moor', which focused on Plymouth's water supply. After relocating to Swanage in 2021 for retirement, David quickly recognized another captivating narrative that needed to be told—the significance of the water tower that stands as a symbol of the town's infrastructure.
A Community’s Determination and Progress
Collaborating closely with the Swanage History Centre, David's latest publication is the first comprehensive examination of the town’s water supply history. It encapsulates a narrative filled with civic determination, Victorian engineering, and modern advancements, all of which transformed a community that once depended on wells. This work is not just a historical account, but a celebration of the individuals who played pivotal roles in the evolution of Swanage’s vital water systems.
Encouraging Local Exploration
As a volunteer at Swanage Museum, David Hawkings hopes his book will ignite a curiosity in others, encouraging them to uncover and appreciate the everyday histories in their own environments. 'The Tower on the Hill' is now available for purchase, enriching the recorded history of Swanage while inspiring future generations to value and explore their local heritage.
