Empowering Change: Alexandria Women for Good Awards Grant to Enhance Literacy Support

A recent event in Alexandria, VA showcased the power of community engagement and philanthropy as the Alexandria Women for Good awarded a significant grant of $13,973 to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. The presentation, held on April 30, marked a pivotal moment in expanding literacy resources for local students.

A Community-Driven Initiative

The grant was introduced by member Eleanor Trice, who recognized the unique contributions of the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium through the organization’s “Gather & Grant” process. This initiative empowers members of Alexandria Women for Good to nominate and vote for nonprofits, fostering a collaborative spirit of giving within the community.

The Impact of Literacy Support

Trice, an active volunteer in ATC’s Book Buddies reading program, expressed her passion for the impact that literacy support has on young learners. “I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods used in ATC’s Book Buddies program,” she stated. The personal connections formed with students provide a nurturing environment essential for their educational journey.

Reaching More Students

With the grant from Alexandria Women for Good, the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium aims to extend its reach. Currently, volunteer tutors are positively influencing the lives of approximately 300 students across 14 public elementary schools in Alexandria. Board member Mary Ann Solomon noted the organization’s growth and how crucial grant support is for their mission: “These volunteers work with 300 kids putting them on the path to success and with this grant, we’ll be able to reach even more next year.”

A Call for Community Connection

Alexandria Women for Good not only facilitates impactful grants but also cultivates a network of women seeking to strengthen their community through friendship and philanthropy. The organization is actively working towards a $15,000 fundraising goal for their next grant cycle and welcomes more women to join their efforts. Their upcoming Gather & Grant event on May 7 is an opportunity for community members to engage, learn, and support the important work of local nonprofits.

The collaborative efforts exemplified by Alexandria Women for Good and the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium highlight the potential of grassroots initiatives to foster educational growth and community resilience, proving that collective action can lead to meaningful change.
