Empowering Future Generations: The Junior Good Citizen Initiative in Swindon and Wiltshire
The Junior Good Citizen (JGC) initiative has made a significant impact in equipping approximately 3,800 young people across Swindon and Wiltshire with essential safety knowledge as they transition to secondary school. This year's program, which took place throughout June 2026, was expertly delivered by Wiltshire Police’s Youth and Early Intervention Team, alongside local partners and neighbourhood policing teams.
Comprehensive Safety Education for Young Minds
With a diversified curriculum, the initiative included interactive sessions that covered crucial topics such as internet safety, hate crime awareness, healthy relationships, and mental health. In Swindon alone, 2,259 children from 47 schools participated in these engaging sessions. Meanwhile, in Wiltshire, the program reached 1,615 children from 59 schools, further addressing concerns surrounding drug and alcohol awareness, anti-bullying strategies, and personal safety advice.
Building Trust and Confidence Among Youths
Chief Inspector Steven Jolly highlighted how these sessions empower young people to make informed and safer choices, emphasizing the importance of knowing how to find support. The collaboration between Wiltshire Police's Neighbourhood Policing Teams and local schools has fostered a culture of trust, showcasing community efforts in enhancing the well-being of youth.
A Legacy of Community Collaboration
As the Junior Good Citizen initiative approaches its 40th year, it continues to stand as a vital project that positively shapes the lives of young individuals in Wiltshire. Local educators have lauded the program, citing it as a powerful example of community collaboration that instills confidence, kindness, and responsibility in the youth.
The overwhelming positive feedback from participants and parents serves as a testament to the program's ongoing success in preparing the next generation for the challenges of adulthood in a supportive and safe environment.
