Empowering the Next Generation: Junior Good Citizen Initiative Makes Waves in Wiltshire
The Junior Good Citizen (JGC) initiative is making significant strides in equipping youth with essential safety knowledge as they transition into secondary school. Over the course of June 2026, this program successfully reached nearly 3,800 children across Swindon and Wiltshire, offering them crucial lessons in safety and well-being.
Interactive Learning Experience
Organized by Wiltshire Police’s Youth and Early Intervention Team, alongside local partners and neighbourhood policing teams, the initiative included engaging interactive sessions at various venues in Swindon and Potterne. In Swindon alone, 2,259 children from 47 schools participated in sessions tailored to cover important topics such as internet safety, hate crime awareness, and mental health. Meanwhile, 1,615 participants from 59 Wiltshire schools took part in discussions surrounding drugs, road safety, bullying, and personal safety advice. This comprehensive approach ensures that children are not only informed but also empowered as they approach the challenges of adolescence.
Building Safety and Trust
The initiative's effectiveness is underscored by positive feedback from schools, parents, and students alike. Chief Inspector Steven Jolly noted that the program is designed to empower children to make informed choices and understand where to seek support. This dialogue between youth and law enforcement fosters trust and understanding, crucial elements in community safety.
A Continuing Legacy
Approaching its 40th year, the Junior Good Citizen program stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration. Educators have praised the program for building confidence, kindness, and responsibility among young people, underscoring its ongoing relevance in today's society. As we cultivate a safer future for our youth, initiatives like these hold the promise of nurturing informed, caring citizens who are prepared to navigate the complexities of the world today.
