Empowering Young Minds: Alexandria Women for Good's Generous Grant Impact

In a remarkable show of community support, the Alexandria Women for Good recently awarded a grant of $13,973 to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. This funding, announced during a celebratory event on April 30, aims to enhance tutoring and literacy initiatives for local students, demonstrating a strong commitment to education and youth development in Alexandria.

Transformative Literacy Support

The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, nominated by AWFG member Eleanor Trice, has a mission to support struggling readers, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed academically. Trice, who volunteers with the Consortium's Book Buddies reading program, expressed her excitement about the grant's potential to further enrich these educational experiences. "I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods," she stated, highlighting the significant positive impact of the program on young learners.

Building a Brighter Future

Currently, volunteer tutors are engaging with approximately 300 students across 14 elementary schools in Alexandria. This initiative not only fosters improved literacy skills but also instills confidence in the children it serves. Mary Ann Solomon, a board member of the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, praised the volunteers’ dedication, likening their efforts to "the little engine that could." She noted that the new grant will enable the organization to reach even more students in the coming year.

A Community of Giving

The Alexandria Women for Good is more than just a grant-giving organization; it serves as a platform for networking, philanthropy, and community bonding among women in Alexandria. With monthly events and volunteer opportunities, the organization seeks to foster deeper connections while supporting vital local nonprofits. They are working toward a fundraising goal of $15,000 for their next grant cycle, inviting more women to join their impactful giving circle.

The next Gather & Grant event is set for Thursday, May 7, at Founders Hall, providing a great opportunity for community members to learn more about the organization and engage with local nonprofits. This commitment to fostering educational success and community engagement exemplifies the ethos of Alexandria Women for Good, making a lasting impact on the lives of local students.
