Empowering Youth: A New Initiative to Boost Confidence and Life Skills

A transformative project called Pathways is making significant strides in helping young people in Redcar develop crucial life skills and self-confidence. Aimed at supporting individuals aged 16 to 25 who live with autism or face mental health challenges, this initiative is designed to equip them with the tools necessary for navigating the complexities of adulthood.

A Personal Touch in Support

Pathways, led by Jenny Crawford, the chief executive of Wellbeing Plus, is a heartwarming response to the unique needs of today’s youth. Drawing from her own experiences, Crawford has tailored this program to address the barriers that traditional youth services present for many young people. She notes, "Many of the young people we aim to support have expressed that traditional youth provision can feel intimidating or unrelatable to them."

Building Confidence Through Community

The program operates on the principle of smaller group sessions that prioritize individual needs, fostering a collaborative environment where young individuals can grow. Crawford emphasizes the importance of trust in these interactions, stating, "First you have to gain trust, and coming together in a non-pressurised, social setting is a good way of doing that." Through various creative projects and skill-building workshops, participants are encouraged to cultivate their independence and confidence.

Support from the Community

Recently, Pathways received a £200 grant from the Broadacres Community Development Fund, which will be utilized to enhance their facilities in Redcar. The program offers hands-on activities like gardening for the infirm and crafting decorative items for fundraising purposes. These initiatives not only promote personal growth but also create a supportive network around each participant.

A Legacy of Care

Since founding Wellbeing Plus in 2018, Crawford has impacted the lives of hundreds, helping them to manage long-term health challenges. Her commitment to creating safe, supportive environments has been pivotal in fostering an atmosphere where individuals can share their stories and connect with one another through creativity.
