Exciting Developments for Accessible Baseball in Cambridge!
The City of Cambridge has exciting news for its residents as it's set to receive a generous grant of $171,659 from the Jays Care Foundation's 2026 Field of Dreams grant program. This funding will significantly aid in the renovations of the Kin 1 Baseball Diamond located at Kinsman Stadium in Riverside Park, currently undergoing much-anticipated upgrades.
A Field for Everyone
The renovation project, which comes alongside a notable donation of $500,000 from the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, showcases the commitment to building a community space that caters to individuals with various needs. The planned improvements include the installation of new pathways, an artificial turf infield, accessible and covered dugouts, upgraded washrooms, and enhanced bleachers for fans. This will become the first fully accessible and inclusive ball diamond in the region, serving as a model for future projects.
Growing the Game
Cam Linwood, Senior Manager of Challenger Baseball with the Jays Care Foundation, spoke about the significance of the new field. He highlighted how it symbolizes a true home for the families involved, especially for their adaptive baseball program, Buddy League. Linwood noted, “It’s been a long road to get to this point, but it really couldn’t have come at a better time,” referring to the need for increasing space as participation in the program has grown from 30 athletes to over 130 in just eight years.
Community Impact
Despite its specialized design for accessibility, Linwood emphasizes that the diamond will remain open for community use, enhancing the collective enjoyment of the facility. “The reality is that anybody can still use it. That’s the best part of fields like this; it still is a community field,” he stated. The hope is that construction wraps up before the end of the current baseball season, allowing everyone to take advantage of this inclusive space that promotes interaction and recreation among all community members.
This project reflects not only a commitment to inclusivity but also the ongoing dedication of various organizations to improve local sports facilities, making them accessible to all. It is a pivotal step toward ensuring that everyone in the community can enjoy the great game of baseball.
