Exciting Expansion of the WaterSure Scheme Aims to Help Thousands More Families

In a commendable move towards aiding vulnerable households, the UK Government has announced an expansion of the WaterSure help scheme, which is already benefiting 260,000 households by saving them an average of £325 on their water bills. This program is being adapted to assist an additional 53,000 low-income households receiving disability benefits, ensuring that more families in need can find relief in these financially challenging times.

Broadening Support for Disabled Families

The changes, reported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), will now include households on disability living allowance, attendance allowance, or personal independence payments (PIP) as eligible for the scheme if their income is below £25,745 annually. This is a significant step forward in making essential services more accessible for those who are often disproportionately affected by financial strain.

Simplified Application Process

In addition to the expanded eligibility criteria, the application process has been simplified. Households will no longer require a doctor's note to apply, making it easier for families to access the financial assistance they require. The reform also promises to adjust the price cap for existing recipients, potentially leading to further savings of up to £100, offering additional relief to those already benefiting from the scheme.

Water minister Emma Hardy emphasized the importance of these reforms, noting, “Vulnerable households are particularly affected by cost-of-living pressures, including water bills. Reforming WaterSure will make a meaningful difference to hundreds of thousands of families who need support the most.” This sentiment is echoed by Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), who expressed delight at the government’s commitment to implementing changes that align with their recommendations, stating that these improvements will provide peace of mind to many customers.

James Taylor, from Scope, also highlighted the significance of this program, pointing out the additional financial burden disabled families face. He remarked, “Water bills for some disabled families can be eye-wateringly high,” underscoring the critical need for continued support systems.
