Exciting New Campaign Aims to Foster Responsible Drinking in Shetland
A new community-driven initiative in Shetland is making waves as it encourages responsible drinking and respectful behavior, particularly during festive events such as Up Helly Aa. Launched by NHS Shetland in December, the campaign, titled ABC – “alcohol, behaviour, call it out,” aims to instill a culture of safety and support within the community.
A Focus on Safe and Respectful Choices
The ABC campaign is designed to educate the public on recognizing personal limits with alcohol and the impact it can have on behavior. The message is clear: residents are encouraged to be vigilant and speak out if they notice inappropriate behavior, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in addressing issues related to alcohol consumption.
Positive Feedback and Future Collaborations
Nicola Balfour, NHS Shetland’s health improvement lead, expressed optimism about the initiative, noting the positive feedback received from various community groups, including the Up Helly Aa committee. This outreach is not only a call for responsible drinking but also a platform to collaborate with different local events, such as music festivals and sporting events, enhancing the campaign's reach and effectiveness.
Community Commitment to Safety
John Fraser, vice-chair of Shetland’s integration joint board, highlighted the project’s promising start and expressed hopes for further collaboration with local sports communities. This approach signifies a collective effort to promote safety, respect, and responsible choices, affirming the role of the community in tackling alcohol-related issues.
The movement is particularly crucial in light of a rise in reported sexual assaults during last year’s Up Helly Aa festivities. With the ABC campaign urging active bystander participation, Shetland is taking significant steps to foster a safer environment for all community members, leveraging collective responsibility to combat inappropriate behavior.
