Exciting New Government Initiatives to Boost Bihar's Sugarcane Farming

In a significant move to enhance agricultural productivity, sugarcane farmers in Bihar are poised to benefit from two newly approved government schemes for the 2026-27 financial year. The initiatives aim to modernize farming practices and reduce costs, thereby fostering an environment for more sustainable agriculture.

Overview of the New Schemes

The government has introduced the Seed Development Scheme and the Sugarcane Mechanisation Scheme, both designed to uplift local farmers and promote modern farming methods. With higher subsidies on seed production and comprehensive financial assistance for machinery, these schemes are set to transform the landscape of sugarcane farming in Bihar.

Seed Development Scheme Details

Under the Seed Development Scheme, farmers producing certified sugarcane seed will benefit from a subsidy of Rs 260 per quintal, with Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) farmers receiving Rs 310 per quintal. Additionally, farmers can access financial support for foundation seed production, with grants of up to Rs 70,000 per hectare.

The initiative aims to encourage innovation in seed production by facilitating breeder seed efforts through esteemed research institutes. Farmers engaged in breeder seed production can earn incentives of up to Rs 2.50 lakh per hectare. Furthermore, adopting the innovative single-bud planting technique will not only minimize seed usage but also lower cultivation costs, with a special subsidy of up to Rs 15,000 per acre available for participants.

Sugarcane Mechanisation Scheme Advancements

The Sugarcane Mechanisation Scheme has allocated Rs 34.60 crore for 2026-27, targeting the distribution of 3,218 agricultural machines across the state and the establishment of 80 machinery banks. This initiative aims to streamline farming processes and improve efficiency for sugarcane farmers.

Farmers in the general category will enjoy a 40 per cent subsidy on eligible agricultural equipment, while SC, ST, and Extremely Backward Class (EBC) farmers will receive 50 per cent support. The scheme also includes substantial subsidies on specific equipment, such as a 75 per cent subsidy for crop residue management tools and an 80 per cent subsidy on seed treatment machines.

Direct Benefits for Farmers

Applications for these transformative schemes are set to be taken online, ensuring a seamless process for farmers. The subsidies will be directly credited to the farmers' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, enhancing financial transparency and support.

These schemes represent a proactive approach by the government to bolster Bihar's agricultural sector by equipping farmers with the necessary tools and resources to thrive. By embracing modern farming techniques, the future looks promising for sugarcane cultivation in the region.
